PROGRAMME: From an article in Cambridge Evening News:<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMullova will perform one of the most difficult pieces in the violinist’s repertoire: the glorious Beethoven concerto. In addition, she’ll be taking on the challenge of directing the orchestra as the soloist, ‘conductor-free’, a relatively recent trend amongst smaller ensembles. ‘I work directly with the players from the violin,’ she says. ‘It’s much more intimate and I very much enjoy the direct connection with members of the orchestra.’<\/em><\/p>\n The orchestra in question is the much-celebrated Philharmonia, Mullova’s regular orchestral partner. As for her instrument, Viktoria either plays her ‘Jules Falk’ 1723 Stradivarius or a Guadagnini violin. But sadly not the Stradivarius that she played in her youth in the USSR. This she had to leave on her hotel bed the day she gave the slip to a KGB agent in Finland back in 1983: she feigned illness, put on a disguise and fled with her lover. He was posing as her accompanist even though he had not played the piano for 20 years.
