The fabulous images of Viktor Vasnetsov, Ivan Bilibin, Elena Polenova, Boris Zvorykin became the main symbols of the national identity of the generation, personifying the search for the ideal “fairy-tale Russia” in the era of revolutions and changes. How did Russian artists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries create the figurative world of the Russian fairy tale, with what picture did the fairy tale genre begin, and why was it not there before?
