The Hermitage is an institution like no other, housing over three million objects in buildings as iconic as the Winter Palace, seat of the Romanov dynasty until its spectacular fall from grace in 1917. Dr Blakesley charts its development from the lavish patronage of Catherine the Great to the unparalleled \u2013 and controversial \u2013 acquisitions of impressionist and post-impressionist works. Drawing on interviews with survivors of the Siege of Leningrad, this event also pays tribute to the Hermitage\u2019s remarkable survival through the Russian Revolution and two world wars, and its resurgent success on an international stage.<\/p>\n
