We continue our series of lectures on the Geographies of Russia <\/i>that showcase various aspects of geography, covering environmental issues, socio-economic and cultural geography, the geography of the Arctic and the culture of the indigenous peoples of Siberia.<\/p>\n

This talk will discuss how Russian Arctic cities came into existence, when, from the point of view of the modern urban economy, they cannot exist. There are no conventional trade networks there and these cities are too small to provide an effective sales market. Often they cannot be reached reach by land, only by plane. So how did the Russian Arctic cities emerge, why do they exist, and what will happen to them in the future?<\/p>\n

Dr Nadezhda Zamyatina will discuss specific case studies and also compare cities across the Arctic. For example, what do Siberian Noril\u2019sk and Alaskan Fairbanks have in common? It is not apparent, but there are many commonalities. She would argue that the Arctic influence on cities is so strong, it appears more important that the differences between Soviet\/Russian and Western political systems.<\/p>\n

Dr Nadezhda Zamyatina is a Russian geographer, one of the leading world experts on the\u00a0 development and urbanisation of the Arctic, and the Russian Arctic in particular.<\/p>\n

Nadezhda obtained her PhD from Moscow State University, where she currently works as an Associate Professor. She is also a leading researcher at the Higher School of Economics (A.A. Vysokovsky Higher School of Urban Studies).<\/p>\n
