Putin\u2019s war in Ukraine has been met by outrage and disbelief around the world. Since the start of the war, writers in Russia, Ukraine and the Russian diaspora have been expressing their opposition to the invasion in an extraordinary outpouring of public and private poetry. The book <\/span>Disbelief<\/em> presents some of the most moving and hard-hitting of these poems in Russian and English. 100 poems by 70 authors, including Polina Barskova, Tatiana Voltskaya and Mikhail Aizenberg, can be ordered HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and HERE<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his lectures on Vladimir Vernadsky, Vsevelod Ivanov argued that in the noosphere \u2013 the intellectual cloud around the planet \u2013 wars and natural disasters create voids which must be filled by the work of poets, artists, musicians, and philosophers. This powerful tragic chorus is just such an attempt, expressing a shared sense of incredulity at a war in the heart of twenty-first century Europe that has left millions displaced and tens of thousands dead or imprisoned; that has triggered an international economic crisis, turned Russia into a pariah state and the Russian language into a tool of cultural erasure and oppression.<\/span><\/p>\n

The editor with all five translators and some of the poets are \u2018coming virtually\u2019 to Cambridge to tell about the project called Kopilka or Coin Bank<\/em>, read a few of the original poems and their translation, and answer questions from CamRuSS audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Julia Nemirovskaya<\/p><\/div>\n

Julia Nemirovskaya<\/a>, editor<\/b> is a Moscow-born poet and author. She was part of Kirill Kovaldzhi\u2019s Poetry Seminar, as well as a member of the Moscow Poetry Club. Her books include poetry, short stories, a novel, and <\/span>Inside the \u201cRussian Soul\u201d: A Historical Survey of Russian Cultural Patterns<\/span><\/i>. Her work has been translated into several languages. She currently teaches at the University of Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria Bloshteyn<\/p><\/div>\n

Maria Bloshteyn<\/a>, translator,<\/b> was born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and emigrated to Canada when she was nine years old. She received her PhD from Toronto\u2019s York University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University, where she examined Dostoevsky\u2019s impact on American literature and culture. She is the author of <\/span>The Making of a Counter-Culture Icon: Henry Miller<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span>s Dostoevsky<\/span><\/i> (2007) and the translator of Alexander Galich\u2019s <\/span>Dress Rehearsal <\/span><\/i>(2009) and Anton Chekhov\u2019s <\/span>The Prank<\/span><\/i> (2015). Her translations have also appeared in a number of journals and anthologies, including <\/span>The Penguin Book of Russian Poetry<\/span><\/i> (Penguin Classics, 2015). She is the editor and main translator of Russia is Burning: Poems of the Great Patriotic War (Smokestack Books, 2020).<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrei Burago<\/p><\/div>\n

Andrei Burago<\/a>, translator,<\/b> was born and raised in St. Petersburg, where he graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of the St. Petersburg State University. Andrei moved to the USA in 1991. Currently, he lives in Seattle and works as a software developer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Richard Coombs<\/p><\/div>\n

Richard Coombes<\/a>, translator,\u00a0<\/b>is a former international tax specialist who retired early to pursue his passion for Russian. He has written music, songs and stories, and translates Russian literature into English. Recently published translations include short stories by Elena Dolgopyat and poetry by Lyudmila Knyazeva, Dmitry Vodennikov and Tatiana Voltskaya, and twelve poems in the World War II poetry collection \u2018Frontovaya Lira\u2019 (\u2018Poems from the Front\u2019). Richard\u2019s translations of Pavel Basinsky\u2019s documentary-thriller-biography \u2018Posmotrite Na Menya\u2019 (English title \u2018Liza\u2019s Waterfall\u2019) and Elena Dolgopyat\u2019s short story collection \u2018Someone Else\u2019s Life\u2019 are to be published in 2023. He is currently translating Alexey Ivanov’s novel “\u041f\u0438\u0449\u0435\u0431\u043b\u043e\u043a” (‘The Food Block’), scheduled for publication in 2024, and has been contracted to translate a recent winner of Russia\u2019s National Bestseller book award.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anna Krushelnitskaya<\/p><\/div>\n

Anna Krushelnitskaya<\/a>, translator,<\/b> lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Anna\u2019s original texts and translations appear in Russian and in English in various print and online publications. She has authored two collections of English poems. Anna\u2019s most voluminous work is the 700-page bilingual interview collection <\/span>Cold War Casual\/ \u041f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u044f \u0445\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0434\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d\u0430<\/span><\/i> (2019).<\/span><\/p>\n

Dmitri Manin<\/p><\/div>\n

Dmitri Manin<\/a>, translator,<\/b>\u00a0is a physicist, programmer, and poetry translator. His translations from English and French into Russian and from Russian to English have been published in books and journals, including <\/span>Delos, Metamorphoses, The Cafe Review, Cardinal Points<\/span><\/i>, and others. He won the first prize in the 2017 Compass Award competition. A book of Dmitri\u2019s translations of Nikolay Zabolotsky\u2019s poetry is coming from <\/span>Arc Publications<\/span><\/i> in 2023<\/span><\/p>\n
