<\/a>Sally started learning Russian in 1993 when Jon went to work in St Petersburg. She threw herself into her lessons with characteristic enthusiasm, and because she was already bilingual (having been brought up in Argentina) she never allowed the possibility of grammatical errors to get in the way of launching into a fluent conversation in Russian whenever the occasion arose.<\/p>\nShe had numerous Russian friends in Cambridge, including Vika Tokareva, at whose home her son Jasper met his future wife Natasha. Sally and Jon were later to spend time at Natasha’s family dacha outside Moscow, and Sally became ever more involved with Russian cultural events in Cambridge, including helping with the organisation of many of the early CamRuSS meetings.<\/p>\n
Sally was quietly efficient, kind and cheerful, always sympathetic and seemingly indefatigable even in the face of her long illness, which she endured for many years with great stoicism and selfless good humour. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.<\/p>\n
