\u00a0\u201cTwo films about Stalin’s USSR: <\/b>
\n1930s propaganda versus 1990s post-socialist realism\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

ABOUT THE COURSE: It will focus on two prominent Soviet\/Russian films:
\n– The Circus<\/i> (Alexandrov, 1934) and
\n– Burnt by the Sun<\/i> (Mikhalkov, 1994),
\nboth featuring life in the USSR in the 1930s, during Stalin’s purges.<\/p>\n
60 years apart, these two films present some surprisingly similar but also strikingly different images and interpretations of the lives and dilemmas faced by people living in that controversial and still often misunderstood period of Soviet history.<\/p>\n
MEALS and VENUE: Madingley Hall is a beautiful historic 16th-century country house near Cambridge set in seven acres of landscaped gardens.<\/p>\n
The course begins with dinner on Friday evening and ends with lunch on Sunday.
\nStudents can attend either as residents or non-residents.

COST: Bursaries of \u00a3100<\/b> are currently being offered to applicants who are new to the Institute of Continuing Education, courtesy of the James Stuart Fund.<\/p>\n
Non-residential FEE is \u00a3240 \u2013 or \u00a3140 with a bursary award<\/b>
\n(including lunch, dinner and all lectures).<\/p>\n
Residential FEE is \u00a3350 \u2013 or just \u00a3250 with a bursary award<\/b>
\n(including bed and breakfast at Madingley Hall in addition to the above).
