{"id":234,"date":"2010-10-18T22:49:19","date_gmt":"2010-10-18T22:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/camruss.salus-marketing.com\/?p=234"},"modified":"2018-06-29T08:15:12","modified_gmt":"2018-06-29T08:15:12","slug":"18-10-2010-russian-cambridge-agm-and-scrumptious-pies-fitzwilliam-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/camruss.com\/en\/18-10-2010-russian-cambridge-agm-and-scrumptious-pies-fitzwilliam-college\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cRussian Cambridge\u201d, AGM, and Scrumptious Pies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Musicologist  Vladimir Orlov gave an intriguing presentation <strong>\u201cEnglish Snow White<br \/>\nversus Yablochko\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 an overview of Russians in Britain generally, and<br \/>\nin Cambridge in particular.<\/p>\n<p>We  learned about John Milton\u2019s travels in Russia in the 17<sup>th<\/sup><br \/>\ncentury summarised in his \u201cBrief History of Moscovia\u201d, as well as what<br \/>\nTchaikovsky had for his gala dinner when he was awarded an honorary doctorate<br \/>\nat Cambridge University in 1893, and why a Russian physicist Pyotr Kapitsa<br \/>\nnicknamed his famous Cambridge supervisor a \u201cCrocodile\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This  was followed by a vigorous <strong>AGM<\/strong>, with a most entertaining<br \/>\ndiscussion of the concept of membership. Our  outgoing chairman Tanya Yurasova whizzed through her annual report, and a new  Organising Committee was elected unanimously, with Ksenia Afonina as a new  President. Ksenia had supported CamRuSS for a number of years, and had helped  to organise a few very memorable events, including the &#8220;Images of Rural  Russia&#8221; exhibition last May. We wish Ksenia never-ceasing enthusiasm,<br \/>\nsparkling energy and brilliant success!<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,  <strong>fabulous home-made food<\/strong> was already waiting, beautifully<br \/>\nprepared by Aniko Eliadze, Elena Kapitsa and Irina Deych.
