John Hughes, an inventor, entrepreneur and social reformer, moved to Tsarist Russia in 1870 and founded the city of Donetsk. Did you know that the old name of Donetsk was Yuzovka (&#8220;HUGHES-ovka&#8221;) after John Hughes?!<\/p>\n<p>He introduced industrial capitalism to Russia and laid the foundations for the country&#8217;s modern iron, steel and railway industries, even though he is still largely overlooked in Britain, and was vilified by the Soviets. This talk endeavours to put Hughes&#8217; remarkable achievements back into the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>The talk will be in ENGLISH, followed by the WINE RECEPTION with traditional Russian, Ukrainian and Welsh MUSIC and REFRESHMENTS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entrance:<\/strong> CamRuSS members and ARU students FREE; Guests \u00a33. Everyone is most welcome!<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Speaker:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following an honours degree in Economics from Sheffield University in 1967, Roderick Heather spent almost 30 years working for various manufacturing businesses in the UK and overseas.\u00a0 In 1995 he moved to Tatarstan in Russia, leading a team of international consultants at a large automotive company for 12 months.\u00a0 In 1997 he became an advisor to UK Foreign Office and later the Department for International Development covering Russia and Poland until 2002.\u00a0 He subsequently worked as a management consultant on various projects in Russia and Ukraine as well as running one of the UK\u2019s leading interim management companies.\u00a0 As well as Russia, Roderick Heather has lived in Canada, Switzerland, France and the USA and has travelled to some 70 different countries.\u00a0 He is currently a Welsh Assembly Government appointee on the Environment Agency\u2019s Flood Risk Management Committee.\u00a0 Roderick is married with 3 adult sons and lives in Chester.<\/p>\n<p>Roderick Heather has also written \u2018Russia from Red to Black\u2019 an amusing auto-biographical account of his experiences living and working in Russia during the Yeltsin and early Putin periods (Penpress 2011).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions to  the  venue:<\/strong><br \/>\nTo find the room Lab006: go through the main entrance of Anglia Ruskin University, turn left through  the glass doors and across the open courtyard to Lord Ashcroft Int\u2019l  Business School building. The room is on the ground floor on your left.  You could also walk straight into the  Lord Ashcroft  Bldg  from  Broad  Street.
