After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email with a Zoom joining link. \nAbout Professor Igor Ruzhitsky \nIgor Vasilievich Ruzhitsky holds the post-doctoral degree of Doctor of Sciences in Philology. He is a Professor of the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language in the Faculty of Philology at Lomonosov Moscow State University and a Professor of the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language at Moscow Region State University (formerly Moscow Region Pedagogical Institute). He supervises the research project “A Dictionary of Dostoevsky’s Language” and is the author of numerous articles and books linked to the study of Dostoevsky’s literary works. \n\nBrad Evans: Was Dostoevsky a nihilist in the same way as\, for instance\, Charles Bukowski – who found Dostoevsky an influence on his own writing? \nProf. Igor Ruzhitsky: 1. Undoubtedly\, we can find quite a lot of parallels between the works of Charles Bukowski and the books of Dostoevsky. And this is quite natural: Bukowski took a lot\, for example\, from Nietzsche\, and Nietzsche\, as everybody knows\, from Dostoevsky. First of all\, probably\, Kirillov’s “philosophy” from “Demons” (the same nihilism). Or suffering\, psychological and spiritual\, as one of the central themes of creativity. Sometimes it seems that Bukowski identified himself with Dostoevsky’s heroes\, with many of them\, even with Marmeladov. Although there are a lot of differences between Bukowski and Dostoevsky. \n2. I categorically disagree with Charles Bukowski’s opinion about how Dostoevsky came to Christ. Bukowski rather writes about the path that is close to himself – through dirt\, failures\, roulette\, rape of a young girl\, etc. All this is more than controversial. Although\, of course\, there was enough dirt in Dostoevsky’s life. Bukowski sees in Dostoevsky what he wants to see\, what is close to him\, and this is quite natural. And he believes in what is close to him. \n3. There is no doubt that Dostoevsky’s path to Christ was influenced primarily by the imitation of the death penalty. Here faith and doubt were united\, and the struggle of faith and doubt remained throughout Dostoevsky’s life. The same key year I talked about\, 1864\, Dostoevsky’s thoughts at the body of his deceased wife: “Masha is lying on the table. Will I see Masha?”. I don’t find this – the struggle of faith and doubt – in Charles Bukowski’s books\, at least\, this theme is far from the main one. And when Bukowski writes that Dostoevsky found his Christ\, then… I don’t know\, many researchers will agree with this\, but I can’t. In my opinion\, Dostoevsky lived with this struggle of the devil and God in his heart. I know that many will disagree with me\, but I think so. If this is considered as Dostoevsky’s nihilism\, then Bukowski’s nihilism hardly has anything in common with it. \n4. In 2006 he gained his MSc in the History of Science\, Technology and Medicine at the University of London. In April 2012 he co-organised with the UK Space Agency a conference held at the Science Museum to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ariel 1 satellite. He was senior curator for the ‘Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age’ exhibition (2015) and editor of the associated publication. His book ‘Satellite: Innovation in Orbit’ was published by Reaktion Books early 2017. In 2016 he curated the acquisition and display of the Soyuz TMA-19M descent module – used by Tim Peake\, Yuri Malenchenko and Tim Kopra during their mission to and from the International Space Station\, 2015-16 – along with the associated virtual reality experience Space Descent VR. On this day\, seventy-seven years ago\, the siege of Leningrad was finally lifted after 872 days of total blockade imposed on the city by the Axis powers during the Second World War. \nThis year marks 80 years since the outbreak of the deadliest of human tragedies of the 20th century\, which took the lives of over 800\,000 people. Anna Reid dedicated several years to her research about the siege\, placing the focus on personal encounters of its witnesses and survivors. Her publication “LENINGRAD: Tragedy of a City Under Siege\, 1941-44” tells a moving story of “the depths and heights of human behaviour” in unprecedented circumstances. This year will be the 10th anniversary of its first publication. Anna kindly agreed to talk to us about her work\, share her personal encounters from the meetings with the blokadniki and their families and other insights into her extensive research in Russia. \n“The siege’s most eloquent victims – the diarists whose voices form the core of this book – are easy to relate to. After studying Russian in school he gained a degree in Russian Studies from the University of Leeds\, which included spending a year in the USSR. He spent six years as a Soviet military analyst at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst\, before moving to the BBC World Service as Russian Affairs Analyst. During 16 years at the BBC\, Stephen reported on the collapse of the USSR\, the chaos of the 1990s and the rise of Vladimir Putin\, interviewing many of those who helped bring about the changes\, notably Mikhail Gorbachev. Putin has raised up the security services\, so there is a certain prestige in working for them. But this doesn’t always bring in the best people\, and the kind of mistakes made by e.g. the GRU agents who went to Salisbury to kill Sergei Skipal or those who failed to kill Navalny shows a level of incompetence which (I am guessing) would annoy Putin! The republic of Dagestan\, in Russia’s North Caucasus\, is a diverse place where Islam has been practised for more than a millennium. Just to Dagestan’s north is the Buddhist-practising republic of Kalmykia. This presentation contrasts these two places\, drawing on their differences but also noting similarities between the two: history\, religious identity\, the challenges of minority status\, peripherality\, and economic underdevelopment. Dagestan\, with its mountainous and piedmont regions\, is characterised by contrasts–urban vs. rural\, modern vs. traditional\, Russian vs. non-Russian. Fry in a hot frying pan with a little oil. Apply a light dusting of salt and set aside. \nFinely chop the onion and fry in the frying pan with 2 tablespoons of oil until golden. Add a tin of chopped tomatoes to the pan and fry for 5 minutes. Add 100ml of water to the pan and mix well\, then add previously fried aubergines and allow to cook for further 5-7 minutes on medium heat until sauce is reduced a little. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add finely chopped coriander\, parsley\, and crushed garlic. Cook for another 2 minutes and remove from the heat. \nServe hot or cold. \n  \nAubergines in mayonnaise sauce \nIngredients: \nAubergines x 2 \nMayo x 5 tbs \nGarlic x 4 cloves \nFresh coriander x 1/2 bunch \nSalt\, pepper olive or veg oil x 3 tbs. \nRecipe \nPeel the aubergines from four sides\, cut them in half and then slice each half in quarters. Fry in the hot frying pan with a little oil. Apply a light dusting of salt and set aside. \nVery finely chop the coriander and crush the garlic. Mix them together in the bowl or pestle and mortar\, add some salt and mix well. Add the mix into the mayonnaise\, add the grilled aubergines\, mix well and place in the fridge to cool. \n  \nAubergines in walnut sauce \nIngredients: \nAubergines x 2 \nWalnuts x 100 g \nGarlic x 4 cloves \nFresh coriander x 5 sprigs \nGround coriander x 1 tbs \nGround fenugreek x 1 tbs \nGround turmeric x 1 tsp \nPomegranate seeds x 3 tbs \nSalt\, pepper\, olive or veg oil x 3 tbs. \nRecipe \nThis recipe will require the use of a food processor or old-fashioned meat mincer. \nPeel the aubergines from four sides\, and then slice them lengthways into thin slices. Fry in the hot frying pan with a little oil. Apply a light dusting of salt and set aside. \nMake sure the food processor or meat mincer are totally clean and dry; blitz the walnuts to the powder\, add the coriander leaves (separate them from the stalks)\, crushed garlic and blitz until the paste is formed. \nEmpty paste into the bowl and add the Korma curry mix. Mix well\, add salt and pepper to taste. Add enough lukewarm boiled water to make the paste easy to spread. \nSpread the paste over one side of the fried aubergine slice and roll each slice up. \nArrange the rolls on the plate and sprinkle with some pomegranate seeds. \nElena suggests preparing walnut paste in advance of the class to save time for the demonstration of other dishes. \nTo make the walnut paste\, you will require a food processor or electric mincer.
