SUMMARY:[:en]Cambridge Treasure Hunt #4[:ru]«Бегущий Кембридж\, или поиск сокровищ» №4[:]
DESCRIPTION:A team-based walking adventure exploring the city (a brand-new treasure hunt created by Tanya Yurasova* and Sayara Thompson). \nHow well do you know Cambridge? How observant are you? To find out\, please join us for our fun “treasure hunt”! The “treasures” are not real\, of course – they are merely some of the buildings and lanes of Cambridge that you’ll need to identify from photographs and find in the city centre in order to answer a number of questions. After a brisk stroll around the city\, we’ll meet to name the winners and celebrate! \nWhen: Sunday 26 September\, 15:00 – 17:30 (BST) \nWhere: Outdoors (please dress accordingly) \nMeeting point (start and finish): Diana’s Rose Garden – in Christ’s Pieces park between the Central Bus Station and the Grafton Centre. \nLanguage: Russian/English. You only need to be able to speak one of the two languages in order to take part; all questions will be in Russian and English. Bring along your Russian- or English-speaking friends\, colleagues and family members! \nTeams of 4 people. You may form and book your own team or\, if you are new and don’t know many people\, we can help you to form a team – a great way to make new friends. \nFee: FREE for CamRuSS members; Adults – £3; Family – £5 (two adults and children under 16 years old). Please pay with cash at the event. \nRegistration is required. Please register by filling in this form as soon as you can\, but no later than Friday 24 September. \nWhat is it? The “treasures” are visual – they are sights in central Cambridge; you will need to spot them from photos\, find them\, and answer some short questions. The idea is NOT to check your knowledge of Cambridge\, but to have fun in pleasant company\, enjoy the scenery\, and possibly learn a few interesting facts. Hence\, please bring along your smartphones – you will be allowed to use Google! \nBy the way\, please don’t be misled by the picture – it is only an illustration. We are not revealing the real questions to you! \n* Tanya Yurasova is a qualified green-badge Cambridge guide. Please see what guided city tours she offers here: https://tancam.uk/tours

SUMMARY:[:en]"Writing the Siege of Leningrad" with Anna Reid - Friday\, 5 March at 19:00 (GMT)[:ru]«Изучая и описывая блокаду Ленинграда» c Анной Рид – Пятница\, 5 марта в 19:00[:]
DESCRIPTION:Anna Reid\, LENINGRAD: Tragedy of a City Under Siege\, 1941-44\, Bloomsbury\, 2011 \n27 January 1944 is a sacred date in the memory of most Leningraders. On this day\, seventy-seven years ago\, the siege of Leningrad was finally lifted after 872 days of total blockade imposed on the city by the Axis powers during the Second World War. \nThis year marks 80 years since the outbreak of the deadliest of human tragedies of the 20th century\, which took the lives of over 800\,000 people. Anna Reid dedicated several years to her research about the siege\, placing the focus on personal encounters of its witnesses and survivors. Her publication “LENINGRAD: Tragedy of a City Under Siege\, 1941-44” tells a moving story of “the depths and heights of human behaviour” in unprecedented circumstances. This year will be the 10th anniversary of its first publication. Anna kindly agreed to talk to us about her work\, share her personal encounters from the meetings with the blokadniki and their families and other insights into her extensive research in Russia. \n“The siege’s most eloquent victims – the diarists whose voices form the core of this book – are easy to relate to. They are not faceless poor-world peasants but educated city-dwelling Europeans – writers\, artists\, university lecturers\, librarians\, museum curators\, factory managers\, bookkeepers\, pensioners\, housewives\, students and schoolchildren; owners of the best coats\, gramophones\, favourite novels\, pet dogs – people\, in short\, much like ourselves. Some did turn out to be heroes\, others to be selfish and callous\, most to be a mixture of both. As a memoirist puts it of the Party representatives in the wartime military hospital\, “There were good ones\, bad ones\, and the usual”. “Their words are their best memorial.” (Anna Reid) \nAnna Reid presents her book “LENINGRAD: Tragedy of a City Under Siege\, 1941-44” \nLeningrad is magnificent living history: all life and death is in these burning pages (The Guardian Review\, 2011) \n  \nWHEN: Friday\, 5 March 2021\, 19:00 (GMT)\nWHERE: Zoom\nLANGUAGE: English \nPlease register in advance. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nAbout the speaker \nAnna Reid \nAnna Reid is an English journalist and author whose work focuses primarily on the history of Eastern Europe. She read law at Oxford University and studied Russian History at the University College London School of Slavonic and East European Studies. After working as a consultant and business journalist\, she moved to Kiev\, where she acted as the Ukraine correspondent for the Economist from 1993 to 1995. From 2003 to 2007 she worked for the British think-tank Policy Exchange\, editing several of their publications and running the foreign affairs programme. \nHer first book\, Borderland: A Journey through the History of the Ukraine\, was published to wide acclaim in 1997. She is also the author of The Shaman’s Coat: A Native History of Siberia (Bloomsbury\, 2003) and is currently working on The Russia Stunt which is forthcoming from John Murray. \n“LENINGRAD: Tragedy of a City Under Siege\, 1941-44” is currently available on amazon.co.uk \n\nCamRuSS held an art exhibition  “Elena Marttila: Art and Endurance in the Siege of Leningrad\,” at Darwin College\, Cambridge\, accompanied by a series of talks and film screenings in 2017. Video recordings of the talks are available in the programme section of the exhibition’s website. \nOn the theme of Russian WWII Poetry\, you can view the presentation slides of a talk by Dr Maria Bloshteyn (22 October 2020) with some of the poems included in the bilingual book of poetry “Russia is Burning: Poems of the Great Patriotic War.” Dr Bloshteyn’s edited volume can be purchased from its publisher Smockestack Books or from various bookshops: Blackwell’s (Heffers)\, Waterstones\, Poetry Book Society\, or Amazon. \nYou can also read two book reviews “Comrade\, Shed No Tears” in magazine Literary Review by Robert Chandler and “Russia’s Great Patriotic War” in The Postil Magazine by N. Or was John le Carré closer to the mark? The Portland Spy Ring of the late 1950s and early 1960s showed how espionage can involve people who live apparently ordinary lives. But serious damage was done to British interests. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWHEN: Thursday\, 11 February 2021\, 19:00 (GMT)\nWHERE: Zoom\nLANGUAGE: English \nPlease register in advance. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n  \nAbout the speaker \nStephen Dalziel \nStephen Dalziel has been involved with the Soviet Union and Russia from an early age. After studying Russian in school he gained a degree in Russian Studies from the University of Leeds\, which included spending a year in the USSR. He spent six years as a Soviet military analyst at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst\, before moving to the BBC World Service as Russian Affairs Analyst. During 16 years at the BBC\, Stephen reported on the collapse of the USSR\, the chaos of the 1990s and the rise of Vladimir Putin\, interviewing many of those who helped bring about the changes\, notably Mikhail Gorbachev. After leaving the BBC\, Stephen ran the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce for five years\, and for nearly a decade has worked independently on a number of projects\, in recent years translating political and history books from Russian to English. \nFor more information about Stephen Dalziel’s work\, please visit his website www.sdwriting.org  \n  \nStephen’s comments on some of the participants’ questions: \nTo Susan Dennehy: No\, Yevgeny Ivanov (who was involved with Christine Keeler in the Profumo Affair) wasn’t involved with the Portland Spy Ring. Even though he was at the Soviet Embassy in London from March 1960 – January 1963\, by this time (indeed\, from July 1959) Houghton was being handled entirely by Molody (Lonsdale) and his connection with the Embassy had been terminated. \nTo Jane Milton and her sister\, Sarah Thomson: Thank you SO much for adding your experience to the story. It was fascinating having you in the audience\, able to bring in your father’s memories of the case. A fantastic addition. Thank you very much! \nTo Robin Spratt: It seems that\, despite the lack of an ideology (as you rightly point out) the KGB is not having a problem recruiting – although what may be questionable is the quality of candidates. Putin has raised up the security services\, so there is a certain prestige in working for them. But this doesn’t always bring in the best people\, and the kind of mistakes made by e.g. the GRU agents who went to Salisbury to kill Sergei Skipal or those who failed to kill Navalny shows a level of incompetence which (I am guessing) would annoy Putin! For more on the security services\, I recommend the various books by Andrei Soldatov\, an excellent investigative journalist. \n  \nStephen mentioned the book “Dead Doubles” by Trevor Barnes during his talk. You can find it on Weidenfeld & Nicolson publisher website and on Amazon.

SUMMARY:[:en]"The National Republics of Russia’s Southwest: Dagestan and Kalmykia Compared" with Dr Edward Holland and Dr Elvira Churyumova – Friday\, 15 January\, 19:00[:ru]«Национальные республики юго-западa России: Дагестан и Калмыкия в сравнении» - Др Эдвард Холланд и Др Эльвира Чурюмова – Пятница\, 15 января\, 19:00 (GMT)[:]
DESCRIPTION:The Sulakskiy Canyon\, Dagestan and the Single Poplar Tree\, Kalmykia \nFar from the Orthodox Cathedrals of Moscow and Russia’s heartland\, in the country’s southwest\, are two neighbouring regions where other religious traditions predominate. The republic of Dagestan\, in Russia’s North Caucasus\, is a diverse place where Islam has been practised for more than a millennium. Just to Dagestan’s north is the Buddhist-practising republic of Kalmykia. This presentation contrasts these two places\, drawing on their differences but also noting similarities between the two: history\, religious identity\, the challenges of minority status\, peripherality\, and economic underdevelopment. Dagestan\, with its mountainous and piedmont regions\, is characterised by contrasts–urban vs. rural\, modern vs. traditional\, Russian vs. non-Russian. Kalmykia’s fraught history–including deportation during World War II and forced sedentarisation during the early Soviet period–mark it as a region that the Russian state has tried to integrate\, at times forcefully\, into its institutions and structure. \nWHEN: Friday\, 15 January 2021\, 19:00 (GMT)\nWHERE: Zoom \nLANGUAGE: English \nPlease register in advance. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n  \nAbout the speakers \nEdward C. Holland is an Assistant Professor of Geography in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arkansas. He received his PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado at Boulder. After completing his degree\, Edward was a Title VIII Research Scholar at the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies\, part of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington\, DC. From 2013 to 2016\, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies and Visiting Assistant Professor of International Studies at Miami University. He was a visiting fellow at Wolfson College\, University of Cambridge in the 2019-2020 academic year. \nElvira Churyumova has a BA degree in History from Kalmyk State University\, a PhD in Political Sciences from the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow\, and an MSc degree in Migration Studies from Oxford University. From 2014-2018 she was a Research Associate with the Kalmyk Cultural Heritage Documentation Project at Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit\, University of Cambridge. In 2018-2019 she worked on the project on Kalmyk refugees in Interwar Europe at the University of Arkansas with Dr Holland. She is currently an affiliated researcher at the Mongolia and Inner Studies Unit of the University of Cambridge.

She currently lives in Letchworth and runs a masterclass ‘Lena Cooks You Eat’ on YouTube here. She is very passionate about the versatility and fusion of flavours in Georgian cuisine and will demonstrate how to make three different dishes with one main ingredient. \nYou will have an opportunity to chat\, ask questions and simply enjoy cooking together during this event. \nWHEN: Friday\, 18 December\, 19:00-20:30\nWHERE: Zoom\nLANGUAGE: English \nTICKETS: Free \nPlease register in advance. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nElena Riddle will be cooking four delicious dishes: Penovani Khachapuri\, which is the most important dish in Georgian culinary heritage\, plus three dishes using aubergine – Aubergines with tomato sauce\, Aubergines with mayonnaise sauce\, and Aubergine rolls with walnut sauce. \n  \nPenovani Khachapuri \nIngredients: \nPuff pastry x 2 rolls \nFor the cheese filling: \nHalloumi x 1 pack \nFeta x 1 /2 pack \nMozzarella x 1 pack \nEggs x 1-2 \nMilk x 4 tbs \nRecipe \nPut the oven on 200 degrees Celsius (or its equivalent for gas ovens) \nGrate the cheeses (feta cheese could be crumbled)\, add one egg\, mix well\, and set aside. \nLine the baking sheet (30 x 38cm) with parchment paper\, unroll the puff pastry onto the parchment paper\, make sure the pastry is right in the middle of the baking sheet. \nTake the fork and stab the pastry sheet randomly to prevent excessive raising. \nPut the cheese mixture on the pastry and distribute evenly leaving 2 cm from the edges. \nUnroll the second roll of the puff pastry\, stab with the fork again and cover the first roll with the cheese and crimp the edges together all the way around. Brush the top of the pastry with milk and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. \n  \nAubergines in tomato sauce \nIngredients: \nAubergines x 2 \nOnions x 2 medium \nTinned chopped tomatoes x 1 tin \nGarlic x 3 cloves \nFresh coriander x 1/2 bunch \nFresh basil x 1/2 bunch \nFresh parsley x 1/2 bunch \nSalt and pepper\, Olive or veg oil x 3 tbs. \nRecipe \nPeel the aubergines from four sides\, cut them in half and then slice each half in quarters. Fry in a hot frying pan with a little oil. Apply a light dusting of salt and set aside. \nFinely chop the onion and fry in the frying pan with 2 tablespoons of oil until golden. Add a tin of chopped tomatoes to the pan and fry for 5 minutes. Add 100ml of water to the pan and mix well\, then add previously fried aubergines and allow to cook for further 5-7 minutes on medium heat until sauce is reduced a little. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add finely chopped coriander\, parsley\, and crushed garlic. Cook for another 2 minutes and remove from the heat. \nServe hot or cold. \n  \nAubergines in mayonnaise sauce \nIngredients: \nAubergines x 2 \nMayo x 5 tbs \nGarlic x 4 cloves \nFresh coriander x 1/2 bunch \nSalt\, pepper olive or veg oil x 3 tbs. \nRecipe \nPeel the aubergines from four sides\, cut them in half and then slice each half in quarters. Fry in the hot frying pan with a little oil. Apply a light dusting of salt and set aside. \nVery finely chop the coriander and crush the garlic. Mix them together in the bowl or pestle and mortar\, add some salt and mix well. Add the mix into the mayonnaise\, add the grilled aubergines\, mix well and place in the fridge to cool. \n  \nAubergines in walnut sauce \nIngredients: \nAubergines x 2 \nWalnuts x 100 g \nGarlic x 4 cloves \nFresh coriander x 5 sprigs \nGround coriander x 1 tbs \nGround fenugreek x 1 tbs \nGround turmeric x 1 tsp \nPomegranate seeds x 3 tbs \nSalt\, pepper\, olive or veg oil x 3 tbs. \nRecipe \nThis recipe will require the use of a food processor or old-fashioned meat mincer. \nPeel the aubergines from four sides\, and then slice them lengthways into thin slices. Fry in the hot frying pan with a little oil. Apply a light dusting of salt and set aside. \nMake sure the food processor or meat mincer are totally clean and dry; blitz the walnuts to the powder\, add the coriander leaves (separate them from the stalks)\, crushed garlic and blitz until the paste is formed. \nEmpty paste into the bowl and add the Korma curry mix. Mix well\, add salt and pepper to taste. Add enough lukewarm boiled water to make the paste easy to spread. \nSpread the paste over one side of the fried aubergine slice and roll each slice up. \nArrange the rolls on the plate and sprinkle with some pomegranate seeds. \nElena suggests preparing walnut paste in advance of the class to save time for the demonstration of other dishes. \nTo make the walnut paste\, you will require a food processor or electric mincer. Separate coriander leaves from the stalks\, peel the garlic and chop it or use the garlic crusher. Put the walnuts\, garlic and coriander in the food processor\, blend or mince it well\, add dry spices\, salt\, pepper and set aside. \nPlease follow this link to watch a video of how to make the walnut paste and how to cut and fry the aubergines\, \nhttps://youtu.be/Oyd-YCjOZI8 \nRegarding spices\, Elena suggests using Mild Korma spice mix instead of the traditional khmeli-suneli. \n  \nhttps://www.lenacooksyoueat.com/gallery

SUMMARY:[:en]Member of the Family or Barbarian at the Gate? Russia and the West by Sir Tony Brenton[:ru]Член семьи или варвар у ворот? Россия и Запад - сэр Тони Брентон[:]
DESCRIPTION:Russian bear \nThroughout its history Russia has oscillated on the edge of Europe\, from being an insider (as under Peter and Catherine) to being a clear outsider (as under Communism). At the end of the Cold War Gorbachev set Russia on course to become part of a “Common European Home”. But relations are now\, once again\, icy. Sir Tony Brenton looks at what has gone wrong\, and where we might be going. \nSir Tony Brenton \nSIR TONY BRENTON KCMG worked for 30 years for the Foreign Office. \nHe first learnt Arabic and spent three years in Cairo working on the Middle East Dispute. \nFrom 1980-1989 he handled European matters in London and in Brussels\, working on energy issues and the birth of European environment policy. Back in London he ran UN issues in the Foreign Office and took charge of preparation for the 1992 ‘Earth Summit’\, which achieved the first global agreement on Climate Change. \nAfter a year at Harvard (writing a book about international environment policy – ‘The Greening of Machiavelli’)\, he learnt Russian and spent 1994-1998 in Moscow dealing with Russian economic reform. \nAfter a further period in London on UN matters (including the establishment of the International Criminal Court)\, he was posted in 2001 to Washington dealing with the consequences of 9/11\, the Afghanistan war and the Iraq war. \nIn 2004 he was posted to Moscow as Ambassador where he managed Britain’s relations with Russia during a turbulent period. \nHe was awarded a KCMG in 2007. He became a Fellow of Wolfson College in 2009. \nSir Tony Brenton is a patron of the Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society. \nTony Brenton has generously shared with us his latest paper entitled “What Do We Do About Russia.” You can view or download it here\, \n \n \n \n \n \n Loading...\n \n \n \n \n \n Taking too long?\n \n \n \n Reload document \n |\n \n Open in new tab \n \n \n \n Download \n  \n

SUMMARY:[:en]"Russian Poetry of the Second World War"\, a talk by Dr Maria Bloshteyn followed by Q&As[:ru]"Русская поэзия Великой Отечественной войны"\, лектор д-р Мария Блоштейн.[:]
DESCRIPTION:The canon of Russian World War II poetry has continued unchallenged for 75 years after the victory over Nazi Germany.  What were the reasons for the enormous output of war poems in the Soviet Union during WWII?  Which poets and poems continue to be excluded from Russian poetry anthologies of the Great Patriotic War?  We will look at some specific examples of excluded poets and their poems from a new bilingual anthology of Russian WWII poetry Russia is Burning (published by Smokestack Books). \nMaria Bloshteyn was born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and emigrated to Canada when she was nine years old. She received her PhD from Toronto’s York University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University\, where she examined Dostoevsky’s impact on American literature and culture. She is the author of The Making of a Counter-Culture Icon: Henry Miller’s Dostoevsky (2007) and the translator of Alexander Galich’s Dress Rehearsal (2009) and Anton Chekhov’s The Prank (2015). Her translations have also appeared in a number of journals and anthologies\, including The Penguin Book of Russian Poetry (Penguin Classics\, 2015).\n*****************************************************************************\nHere you can see the PRESENTATION with the recited poems. \nThe bilingual book of poetry can be purchased from the publisher Smockestack Books or from various bookshops: Blackwell’s (Heffers)\, Waterstones\, Poetry Book Society \, or amazon.\nYou can read two book reviews in Literary Review (by Robert Chandler) and in The Postil (by N. Dass).\n***************************************************************************** \nWHEN: Thursday\, 22 October\, 19:00 GST\nWHERE: Zoom\nLANGUAGE: English (with some poems being read in Russian).\nTickets: FREE* \nPlease register in advance for this meeting.\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n* While there is no charge for our online events\, CamRuSS would welcome any donations towards the support of our volunteers’ efforts in bringing more speakers and online events during the current social distancing time.\n*Suggested donations – adults £10\, CamRuSS members\, OAPs\, students – £5.\nYou can send your donations by a direct bank transfer (BACS) to the following account:\nCambridge Russian-Speaking Society\, NATWEST Bank\,\nSort code: 60-11-30 Account: 18120466.\n \n*****************************************************************************\nAbout the book.\nThe Second World War occupies a special place in Russian memory. Between the German invasion in June 1941 and the liberation of Berlin in May 1945\, over 26 million Soviet civilians\, servicemen and women were killed fighting the Nazis. The war also occupies a special place in the history of Russian poetry. For Anna Akhmatova the Red Army was defending the Russian language as well as Russian soil (‘we will defend you\, Russian speech’). Poems written by Red Army soldiers were published in newspapers and broadcast on the radio. Alexei Surkov’s ‘In the Dugout’ and Konstantin Simonov’s ‘Wait for Me’ became well-known as popular songs. \nPublished to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the War\, Russia is Burning brings together for the first time in any language poems written by Soviet soldiers on the front-line and civilians in the Leningrad blockade\, by émigré poets\, by prisoners of war and Gulag prisoners\, by poets who wrote ‘for the drawer’ and by later writers who tried to understand the war and its long-term effects on Russian society.\nIncluding poems by Boris Slutsky\, Anna Akhmatova\, Boris Pasternak\, Olga Berggoltz\, Alexander Tvardovsky\, Samuel Marshak\, Irina Bem\, Evgeny Vinokurov\, Vsevolod Nekrasov\, Bulat Okudzhava\, Vladimir Vysotsky and Ilya Ehrenburg\, Russia is Burning is stunning testimony to the power of poetry to resist Fascism and a reminder of the extraordinary heroism and endurance of the Soviet people in the war against Nazi Germany.

SUMMARY:[:en]NEW DATE. Operation Barbarossa: The turning point of WWII- a talk by Dr John Barber with Q&As[:ru]НОВАЯ ДАТА ЛЕКЦИИ. "Операция Барбаросса: Переломный момент Второй мировой войны" - лекция доктора исторических наук Джона Барбера с последующим обсуждением.[:]
DESCRIPTION:Operation Barbarossa \nOperation Barbarossa was the code name for the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union\, which started on Sunday\, 22 June 1941\, during World War II. The operation put into action Nazi Germany’s ideological goal of conquering the western Soviet Union so as to repopulate it with Germans. The German Master Plan for the East (Generalplan Ost\, GPO) aimed to use some of the conquered as slave labour for the Axis war effort\, to acquire the oil reserves of the Caucasus and the agricultural resources of Soviet territories\, and eventually to annihilate the Slavic peoples and create Lebensraum\, geopolitical goal for Germany. \nThe Generalplan Ost\, or Master Plan for the East\, was the Nazi German government’s plan for the genocide and ethnic cleansing on a vast scale\, and colonization of Central and Eastern Europe by Germans. It was to be undertaken in territories occupied by Germany during World War II. The plan was attempted during the war\, resulting indirectly and directly in millions of deaths of ethnic Slavs by shootings\, starvation\, disease\, or extermination through labor. But its full implementation was not considered practicable during the major military operations\, and was prevented by Germany’s defeat. \nThe program operational guidelines were based on the policy of Lebensraum designed by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in fulfillment of the Drang nach Osten (drive to the East) ideology of German expansionism. As such\, it was intended to be a part of the New Order in Europe. \nThe Siege of Leningrad and the Battle of Moscow began in Sept/Oct 1941 because the Operation Barbarossa\, Hitler’s Blitzkrieg\, has failed. The real turning point is December 1941 when the Germans were defeated at Moscow\, Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and Hitler declared war on the USA. From that time it really was a world war: GB\, USSR & USA vs Germany\, Italy and Japan. \nWHEN: Friday\, 18 September 2020 at 19:00\nWHERE: Zoom meeting Meeting ID: 829 2665 3849 \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYkde-uqzgiHt1GKuprLDYKzrQtx-87tcvF \nLANGUAGE: English\nTICKETS: free* \nDr John Barber \nDr John Barber is a historian of Russia in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods at King’s College\, Cambridge. SUMMARY:[:en]Lenin’s Ideas on Revolution: Are they Relevant Today? by Dr David Lane[:ru]"Уместны ли сегодня революционные идеи Ленина?"\, лекция доктора исторических наук Дэвида Лейна[:]
DESCRIPTION:Lenin. Collage by Timur Alexander \nVladimir Il’ich Ulyanov (Lenin) was born in Simbirsk\, Russia. He became the leader of the Soviet government of Russia until his death in 1924. On the 150th anniversary of his birth (22 April 1870) we consider the strategy which led to the overthrow of the Provisional Government in October 1917. Consequently\, his approach to revolution has been adopted by many communist parties after his death and has led to success in many countries\, notably China\, but failed in the West. David Lane will consider his theoretical and practical strategy\, its criticisms and its relevance to current conditions. \n  \nDavid Lane is an Emeritus Fellow of Emmanuel College\, Cambridge University\, UK\, and previously was Professor of Sociology at the University of Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. \nDavid Lane \nDavid was educated at the Universities of Birmingham and Oxford (Nuffield College) and has taught at the Universities of Birmingham\, where he was Professor of Sociology\, and at Essex University. He has been a visiting professor at Cornell\, Odense\, Harvard\, Sabanci (Istanbul)\, Graz\, the Kennan Institute (Washington DC). He has visited and lectured at many universities and research institutes in the countries of the former USSR and eastern and central Europe China and Japan. \nDavid has published widely on state socialist societies\, the USSR\, Marxism\, elites\, class and social stratification; his current research focuses on transformation\, globalization\, ‘varieties of capitalism’\, the enlargement of the European Union and the formation of the Eurasian Union. \nWHEN: Thursday\, 2 July 2020\, 19:00\nWHERE: Zoom \nLANGUAGE: English\nTICKETS: free * \nRegister in advance for this meeting.
